MILA is a 41-story, 402-unit apartment tower at 201 N Garland Ct in Chicago’s Loop. MILA takes its name from its location at the intersection of Michigan Ave and Lake St. The first two floors of the building contain retail space.

First occupancies began in April 2016.

The John Buck Company is the developer. The architecture firm is bKL and McHugh Construction is the general contractor.

The apartments

MILA offers 9 different studio, convertible, one- and two-bedroom floor plans. Floor plans and near real-time availability are online.

Apartments have plank flooring throughout, floor-to-ceiling windows, in-unit washer / dryers and ample closet space. The convertible layout’s unusual features include a built-in desk and three closets. Corner one- and two-bedroom units have balconies.

Kitchens have duotone cabinetry, quartz counters, breakfast bar islands with an under-mount sink, and a stainless steel appliance package that includes a 5-burner gas range.

Bathrooms have a nice-sized vanity, an under-mount sink and a mirrored medicine cabinet.

Views. Higher floors have dramatic views of River North and the river to the north and Millenium Park to the south.

Amenities, services, policies

MILA is a full-amenity building with an unusually high level of service, including 24/7 room service, and concierge and valet service. Amenities are located on the 6th and 41st floors.

6th floor amenities include a fitness center with cardio and weight training equipment and yoga studio, a social lounge and a game room with tech bar.

Adjacent to the social lounge is an outdoor deck with an herb garden, grilling stations, seating areas, fire pits, outdoor TVs and a bocce ball court.

MILA’s 41st floor amenities include a rooftop relaxation pool and deck with an adjacent study and resident lounge equipped with a catering kitchen.

The building is pet-friendly and has a grooming station and dog run. Bicycle storage with tune-up station and a bike share program is available to residents. Parking is available in an on-site garage and valet parking will be available for guests.

MILA has on-site leasing, management and maintenance staff and 24/7 door staff.

The location

MILA has a convenient location on the northwest corner of Michigan Ave and Lake St.

Millennium Park and Grant Park begin just a south of the building.

Access to the Chicago Pedway is just across the street. Many Loop and New East Side destinations can be reached via the Pedway without exposure to winter cold, spring rains or summer heat.

Shopping. Residents at MILA have reasonably convenient access to grocery shopping.

Bockwinkel’s is two short blocks east, and a number of convenience stores are nearby.

The Mariano’s Fresh Market at Lakeshore East gets mostly rave reviews on Yelp. Target is four blocks southeast of the building.

Several pharmacies are within a short walk of the building.

The Shops at North Bridge, 50 stores and 20 restaurants anchored by Nordstrom, and Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile shops are a short walk north of the building. State Street shops, anchored by Macy’s, are within a few minutes’ walk of MILA.

Dining, nightlife. A lot of the dining and nightlife options in the immediate area, as you’d expect, cater to hotel guests, office workers and tourists.

That said, there are literally 100s of restaurant, dining and nightlife options within a short walk of MILA.

Cultural attractions. MILA is near many of Chicago’s most popular cultural attractions.

The Loop’s theatre district begins a block west of 200 North Michigan.

The Cultural Center, Art Institute, Lyric Opera and Chicago Symphony are a short walk or cab ride from the building.

Parks, recreation. MILA has good access to public parks.

Millennium Park, one of the city’s main downtown attractions, is a block away from MILA.

The Riverwalk, which is undergoing an expansion, is two short blocks north of the building. There are a variety of dining and recreational opportunities along the river, and docks for seasonal tour boats.

Transportation. MILA has outstanding access to public transportation.

The CTA Red Line is a short walk from the building as are the stations serving five of the CTA train lines. The Blue Line to O’Hare is a few minutes from the building.

CTA bus routes steps from the building connect to points east, west, north and south.

Trains from Metra’s Millennium Station, a block south of MILA, reach Hyde Park and the University of Chicago in about 20 minutes.

Some residents of MILA may consider cabs the best form of public transportation, and service is available 24/7. Zipcar car-sharing locations are nearby.

MILA has good proximity to Lake Shore Drive, but relatively inconvenient access to I-90/94 and the city’s expressway grid.

Chicago Water Taxi offers seasonal commuter service between Michigan Avenue and Madison Street, affording MILA residents a pleasant, low-cost way to reach the Loop and the Willis Tower.

The competition

Rentals are typically available in a number of nearby condo buildings, sometimes at lower rents than in the managed apartment buildings.
