211 East Delaware, Streeterville

by Joe Zekas on 10/3/13

211 East Delaware is a 16-story, 135-unit vintage apartment building at 211 E Delaware Pl in Streeterville. It was built in 1927 and designed by the firm of Oldefest & Williams.

The building changed ownership half a dozen years ago and was subsequently renovated.

The apartments

211 East Delaware is an all-studio building. As of late September, 2013 rents ranged from $995 to $1,395.

There are 9 separate floor plans with varying amounts of closet space. Units have hardwood floors, crown moldings and individual heat and air-conditioning.

Kitchens are equipped with stainless steel appliances, including built-in microwaves, dishwashers and gas ranges. Most of the kitchens are compact single-wall layouts, but several are larger.

Views. 211 East Delaware is not a view building due to the area’s density and the height of neighboring buildings.

Amenities, services, policies

Building amenities include a rooftop sundeck and fitness room.

There’s a bike room adjacent to the lobby and a card-operated laundry room with vending machines.

211 East Delaware has on-site maintenance, but does not have door staff. Cats are OK, dogs are not. Parking is not available on-site.

The location

211 East Delaware is in the long-established north section of Streeterville, an area characterized by a rich architectural mix but dominated by high-rise buildings dating to the 1920s.

The building is conveniently located a block east of two of Chicago’s most instantly-recognizable buildings, the iconic John Hancock Center and Water Tower Place.

211 East Delaware is close to Loyola University’s Water Tower campus and Northwestern University’s downtown campus, and a short walk from Lurie Children’s and Prentice Women’s hospitals.

Walk Score gives the location a “Walker’s Paradise” score of 97 and an undeserved “Excellent Transit” score of 90.

Shopping. The nearest full-service grocery stores, each about a half-dozen blocks from 211 East Delaware, are Treasure Island, which bills itself as “America’s most European supermarket,” and Whole Foods.

Several delis and convenience stores are within a block or two of the building and East Delaware Pantry is across the street. The popular Goddess and Grocer is a few blocks west on Delaware.

A Walgreen’s Pharmacy is a short walk away on Michigan Ave.

Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile shops are a block west of 211 East Delaware, and Oak Street boutiques are just beyond.

Dining, nightlife, entertainment.
211 East Delaware is in a restaurant-dense environment, with something for almost every mood and palate. Much of the scene caters to hotel guests, office workers and tourists, but there’s also a plethora of neighborhood favorites.

Pelago Ristorante is next door on Delaware and La Grande Vie Francesca’s and Saloon Steakhouse are around the corner on Chestnut.

River North restaurants and nightlife are a few minutes’ walk away.

Parks, recreation. A block south of 211 East Delaware and just east of the Museum of Contemporary Art is Seneca Playlot Park, a tree-shrouded oasis that always seems to be flooded with small children enjoying two playground areas.

Lake Shore Park, which has a running track, softball fields, tennis courts, a playground and a small field house, is a few steps south of the building.

211 East Delaware is a few blocks from the popular Oak Street Beach.

Transportation. CTA bus routes stop a block from the building and represent the most accessible form of public transportation. CTA trains and Metra rail service are not within what most would consider convenient walking distance.

Access to and from Lake Shore Drive is convenient. Reaching I-90/94 and the rest of the city’s expressway grid can often be time-consuming. Expect near-gridlock conditions when there’s a major event in the neighborhood.

Taxi service is readily available, 24/7. Zipcar and I-Go cars are nearby at 260 E Chestnut St.

The competition

211 East Delaware’s primary competition is three buildings that are within a block of it: The Chatelaine, 215 E Chestnut, The Seneca, 200 E Chestnut, and 860 Dewitt.

Rentals are typically available in a number of nearby condo buildings, sometimes at sharply lower rents than in the managed apartment buildings.
