4100 N Marine is a 19-story, 187-unit apartment tower at 4100 N Marine Dr in the Buena Park neighborhood in Uptown, a block north of Lakeview.

4100 N Marine was built in 1958. A group headed by David Malkov was the developer and the architecture firm was a predecessor of Solomon Cordwell & Buenz.

The building has undergone substantial renovation in recent years, and its original light grey façade has been repainted blue.

The apartments

4100 N Marine offers eleven different studio, 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom floor plans. Two-bedrooms have either 1 or 2 baths, and 3-bedrooms have two baths. Floor plans are accessible online.

Kitchens and baths have been updated. Open-plan kitchens have good cabinet and counter space and include dishwashers, gas ranges and built-in microwaves.

The apartments have wood-look floors in living areas and carpeted bedrooms. Some of the layouts have recessed private balconies.

The apartments have good closet space.

Views. The apartments have good views over the park and the lake.

The view south stretches to Navy Pier. The north view looks out on Montrose Harbor.

Amenities, services, policies

4100 N Marine has a solid set of amenities, but does not have a pool.

There’s an on-site management office off the lobby, and evening door staff.

The fitness room and well-equipped laundry room are on the first floor, accessible from the lobby.

4100 N Marine has a large rooftop sundeck with lake views over Lincoln Park, and views along the skyline south to Navy Pier.

The building has a bike storage room and an on-site, drop-off dry cleaners.

4100 N Marine is pet-friendly, with a 25-pound limit.

The location

4100 N Marine is in the Buena Park neighborhood, a block north of Lakeview. Buena Park is a largely residential neighborhood dominated by low-rise buildings and single-family homes, in contrast to the denser and more commercial character of Lakeview.

The building fronts Lake Shore Drive and Lincoln Park. Thorek Hospital is two blocks west of the property.

Shopping. The neighborhood has limited pedestrian access to shopping.

Whole Foods and Jewel-Osco, the nearest full-service groceries, are about three-quarters of a mile from the building. There’s a convenience store a block south in the condo building at 3950 N Lake Shore Dr.

Dining, nightlife, entertainment. Residents are likely to head south to the thriving dining and nightlife scene in Lakeview, since there are few options in Buena Park.

Dollop Coffee Co, two blocks away on Clarendon, is a popular local spot for coffee and sandwiches.

El Mariachi, less than a 10-minute walk southwest, is a good spot for tacos and tequila.

Parks, recreation. 4100 N Marine residents have convenient access to public parks and recreational activities.

The 8-acre Clarendon Park, a few blocks north of the building, has junior baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, a two-hoop basketball court, a dog-friendly area and a playground. The field house has a gym, a fitness center and several meeting rooms.

Free Wi-Fi, a concession stand and volleyball nets are just a few of the draws at nearby Montrose Beach.

The 2-acre Gill Park, about a 10-minute walk from 4100 N Marine, has an indoor pool.

The 1,200-acre Lincoln Park, one of the great public spaces in America, is just east of 4100 N Marine. Lincoln Park has almost every recreational amenity imaginable, from an archery range to a great free zoo.

At this point in the park you’ll find a playground, the 9-hole Sydney Marovitz golf course, tennis courts and ball fields, and a picnic area.

Transportation. 4100 N Marine has good access to bus transportation.

It’s about a 12-minute walk from 4100 N Marine to the CTA Red Line stop at Sheridan. The #80 bus on Irving Park Rd, a block south of the building, travels west to the CTA Red Line and to the Blue Line for connections to O’Hare Airport.

4100 N Marine residents are steps from the #146 (pdf) and #135 bus stops on Lake Shore Drive. The 146 runs express to the 900 Shops, anchored by Bloomingdale’s, on Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile, and then on to the Loop. The #135 bus provides express service to the New East Side and Loop.

A variety of other CTA bus routes traverse the area, not far from the property. The #36 bus on Broadway travels south through Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Gold Coast and River North into the Loop, providing access to endless shopping, dining, nightlife and employment venues.

Lake Shore Drive access is a block south of the building. Crosstown access to I-90/94 and the city’s expressway grid is inconvenient from this location, and can be especially time-consuming before and after Cubs’ games.

A Zipcar car sharing location is on-site and a DIVVY bike station is a short walk away on Irving Park Rd. Taxi service is readily available.

The competition

You’ll find additional options at YoChicago’s Buena Park / Uptown apartment guide.

Rentals are typically available in a number of nearby condo buildings, sometimes at lower rents than in the managed apartment buildings.
