420 East Ohio is a 40-story, 263-unit full-amenity apartment tower at 420 E Ohio St in Streeterville. It was completed in 1990 and was one of the first rental buildings to offer in-unit washer / dryers.
Dirk Lohan of Lohan Associates, now known as Lohan Anderson, was the architect for the building. Lohan was Mies van der Rohe’s grandson.
420 East Ohio has studio, convertible, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, 2-bath and 3-bedroom, 3-bath apartments.
Floor plans and near real-time rent and availability information are accessible online. As of late September 2013 rents started at $1,580 for studios, $1,715 for convertibles, $2,035 for 1-bedrooms, $2,755 for 2-bedroom, 2 bath units and $3,905 for 3-bedroom, 3-baths.
The building has a narrow configuration that lends itself to efficient floor plans with lots of windows and minimal loss of space to hallways. The layouts are also more spacious than those in many of the newer buildings.
Closet space in most of the floor plans compares favorably with many of the newer apartment buildings. Ceiling heights, lower than today’s new buildings, are typical of the era in which 420 East Ohio was built. One-bedroom and larger units have in-unit washer / dryers.
Appliances are electric and include a microwave and dishwasher.
Corner units have curved bay windows that optimize the views. Most of the floor plans have a well-defined dining area. Two-bedroom and larger units have a split-bedroom plan to maximize privacy.
Views. South-facing views are interrupted to some extent by Lake Shore Plaza, across the street. East-facing units and higher-floor units facing north have great views of the lake.

WalkScore gives the location a “Walker’s Paradise” rating of 98 and an undeserved Transit Score of 94.
A Walgreen’s Pharmacy is two blocks south of 420 East Ohio.
Dining, nightlife, entertainment.
There are literally 100s of dining and nightlife options within blocks of 420 East Ohio, although the building doesn’t have as good proximity to them as some of its competitors.
The misleadingly-named Hilton DoubleTree Mag Mile, a block west and south, is home to Markethouse restaurant and an Einstein Bros Bagels outlet. Yolk, a block away, is the go-to breakfast spot, but be prepared for a wait on weekends.
Many of the local restaurants and night spots cater heavily to hotel guests, tourists and office workers, but you won’t have any trouble finding a go-back-to neighborhood favorite. Timothy O’Toole’s Pub, a block west of 420 East Ohio, gets mixed reviews but has its regulars and a large selection of beers on tap.
Parks, recreation. 420 East Ohio has excellent park access.
Directly south of 420 East Ohio is a pleasant park that’s actually the roof of a parking garage.
The building is two blocks from Navy Pier and is close to Jane Addams Memorial Park, Ohio Street Beach and the Lakefront Trail. River Esplanade Park, home to Centennial Fountain, is four blocks south of the building.
Lake Shore Park, which has a running track, softball fields, tennis courts, a playground and a small field house, is four short blocks north. The Museum of Contemporary Art is at the west end of the park and just west of the museum is the delightful, tree-shrouded Seneca Playlot Park.
CTA bus service, via multiple routes, is excellent along Michigan Ave, Illinois St (one-way East-bound) and Grand Ave (one-way West-bound). Cabs are always plentiful in the area.
420 East Ohio has quick access to and from Lake Shore Drive. Reaching I-90/94 and the rest of the city’s expressway grid can often be time-consuming. Expect near-gridlock conditions when there’s a major event in the neighborhood.
420 East Ohio‘s most direct competitors are likely to be The Streeter and Streeter Place, a half-block west. The building competes to a lesser extent with McClurg Court and with other nearby rental buildings.
Rentals are typically available in a number of nearby condo buildings, sometimes at sharply lower rents than in the newer apartment buildings.
