634-42 West Cornelia is a 48-unit, 3-story vintage courtyard walk-up in the Lakeview East neighborhood.

The building, which dates to 1919, has a large, south-facing, landscaped courtyard.

The apartments

634-42 West Cornelia has 1-bedroom apartments. In mid-May of 2014 rents for available apartments ranged from $1,285 to $1,325. Floor plans are available online.

Apartments have large separate dining areas, hardwood floors, crown moldings, walk-in closets and large windows with blinds. Back porches provide private outdoor space, which is scarce in the neighborhood. Some of the apartments have built-ins. The apartments have radiator heat and ceiling fans.

Amenities, services, policies

Like most vintage walk-ups, 634-42 West Cornelia has limited common amenities.

There is a large, landscaped courtyard and an on-site laundry room. The building welcomes cats, but not dogs.

The building has on-site maintenance staff.

The location

634-42 West Cornelia’s Lakeview East location at the periphery of Wrigleyville and Boystown affords its residents steps-to proximity to everything these neighborhoods have to offer, and good proximity to Lincoln Park and the lakefront.

Shopping. 634-42 West Cornelia residents have excellent access to grocery shopping.

Jewel-Osco is right around the corner. Treasure Island is a few doors south on Broadway, and there’s a 7-Eleven nearby.

Whole Foods is a few minutes’ walk away on Halsted, and a Walmart Express, which has a pharmacy in-store, is a block-and-a-half north on Broadway.

There are Target, Marshalls and Bed Bath and Beyond locations nearby for residents setting up housekeeping.

National retail chains are, however, not a dominant presence in the neighborhood, which draws its character from a variety of locally-owned and quirky smaller shops.

Dining, nightlife, entertainment. Whatever you have a taste for is available in hyper-abundance within a short walk.


Finding a regular breakfast spot is the first order of dining business for many, and 634-42 West Cornelia residents will find Waffles Café is a block north and local favorite Ann Sather is two short blocks south. If coffee and munchies suffice, there are several Starbucks locations within a short walk.

Wrigleyville, a few short blocks west, is a dense bar and restaurant destination for Cubs fans, and sports bars are everywhere.

The Broadway strip, around the corner from the building, serves up everything from fast food to Thai to burgers to Irish pubs.

The Halsted Street / Boystown scene, a block west, has dozens of straight, gay and lesbian bars, nightclubs and retail shops.

There are nearly two dozen theaters within walking distance of 634-42 West Cornelia in the Belmont Theater District, and dozens more venues for live music performances.

Neighborhood street festivals and fairs are a great source of entertainment in the summer. Events near 634-42 West Cornelia include – to name a few – Northalsted Market Days, the Lakeview East Festival of the Arts, Wrigleyville Summerfest, SausageFest, the Chicago Marathon and, of course, Pride Week.

The websites for the Lakeview Citizens Council and the Lakeview and Lakeview East Chambers of Commerce are a good source to learn about upcoming events.

Parks, recreation. 634-42 West Cornelia residents have convenient access to public parks and recreational activities.

The 1,200-acre Lincoln Park, one of the great public spaces in America, is two short blocks east of 634-42 West Cornelia. At this point in the park you’ll find a playground, the 9-hole Sydney Marovitz golf course, tennis courts and ball fields and a picnic field.

Lincoln Park has almost every recreational amenity imaginable, from an archery range to a great zoo.

Transportation. 634-42 West Cornelia has good access to public transportation.

A variety of CTA bus routes traverse the area. The #36 Broadway bus at the corner, steps from the property, travels into the Loop. The #152 bus on Addison connects to the CTA Red Line stop at Addison for travel south to the Loop or north to Evanston. The #152 continues west for Blue Line transit to O’Hare Airport. The Addison Red Line stop is less than a 10-minute walk from the property.

634-42 West Cornelia residents have a 4-minute walk to the #146 CTA bus stop on Lake Shore Drive. The 146 runs express to the 900 Shops, anchored by Bloomingdale’s, on Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile, and then on to the Loop.

Lake Shore Drive is a short distance away. There’s a pedestrian underpass just north of Addison (3600 N) but the nearest vehicle access is via Belmont Ave (3200 N) or Irving Park Rd (4000 N). Crosstown access to I-90/94 and the city’s expressway grid is inconvenient from this location, and can be time-consuming before and after Cubs’ games.

Zipcar car-sharing locations and DIVVY bike stations are nearby.
