The Walton Residence is a 12-story, 25-unit luxury vintage high-rise with ground-floor retail at the southern edge of the Gold Coast.

The building, previously known as the Elizabeth Arden building, has neo-gothic architecture and was completed in 1926.

The Walton Residence is different than most rental buildings in that the whole building caters to short term rentals and is fully furnished. The building is managed by DK Living.

The apartments

The Walton Residence has a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Two-bedroom and three-bedroom units also come in a duplex layout. Floor plans are available online. Rent includes heat, cooking gas, cable TV and Internet service.

The building caters to a luxury short-term renter and includes many high-end finishes not often seen in rentals.

The apartments are newly renovated as of late 2015, but retain their vintage touches, including crown moldings, pocket doors and tray ceilings in some units. The units are spacious and include lots of windows.

Apartments feature in-unit washer / dryers, fireplaces, hardwood floors, individual-controlled heating and cooling and dedicated dining spaces.

Kitchens are large and have custom cabinets and granite countertops. Kitchens feature high-end appliances including SubZero refrigerators, Dacor gas ranges, and Asco dishwashers. All kitchens are fully stocked and include dishes, pots, glassware, coffee makers, toasters, and utensils.

Bathrooms include marble floors and ample storage. Some units include a separate Jacuzzi tub and shower.

Bedrooms include custom built-in closets.

Units are fully furnished with high-end furniture and include all of the creature comforts people would want including custom bedding and linens, bathroom accessories, plasma TVs with DVD players, land line phones and clock radios.

Views. Higher-floor apartments have decent views, but view corridors are constrained by the height of nearby buildings.

Amenities, services, policies

The Walton Residence, typical of Gold Coast vintage buildings, has a limited suite of common-area amenities and no on-site parking.

The building has on-site management and maintenance, 24-hour door staff and package acceptance service. Pets are welcome.

The location

The Walton Residence’s location is very appealing: pedestrian-friendly, architecturally varied, saturated in the indicia of civilized urbanity and steps from major attractions.

Walk two blocks from 70 East Walton and you’re greeted by one of the city’s most recognizable urban vistas: a view of the Water Tower, the Hancock Center and Water Tower Place. The location is a major draw for shoppers and tourists, and it’s almost always teeming with people.

Loyola University’s Water Tower campus is a few steps north of The Chicagoan. Northwestern and Lurie Children’s hospitals are a short walk further east.

Shopping. Residents of The Walton Residence have convenient access to major grocery stores. Access to retail shops is as good as it gets.

Treasure Island, which bills itself as “America’s most European supermarket,” is a short walk from the building.

A new Jewel Foods is under construction at 1200 N Clark St and is slated to open summer 2017.

Potash Markets and Whole Foods are a few blocks south of The Walton Residence.

CVS and Walgreens pharmacies are nearby.

One of the densest, most interesting restaurant and nightlife clusters in Chicago – what some call the Viagra Triangle – is a block north of The Walton Residence.

Locals just call it “the triangle,” after the shape of Mariano Park.

Just north of the triangle is the storied Division Street nightlife strip, home to Bootleggers, the legendary Butch McGuire’s and more than a dozen other establishments.

Connors Park is home to a new Argo Tea. Just beyond Argo is McCormick & Schmick’s on Chestnut.

You can’t walk far in any direction from the building without finding a Starbucks.

Parks, recreation. Residents at The Walton Residence have good access to a variety of parks and recreational activities.

Washington Square Park, a tranquil gem, is two short blocks southwest of The Walton Residence.

The building is almost equidistant from the CTA Red Line stop at Chicago Ave, a 7-minute walk south, and the Clark and Division stop, an 8-minute walk northwest.

A variety of CTA bus routes travel along State St and Michigan Ave, less than a block from the building.

East-west access to I-90/94 and the rest of the city’s expressway grid can be painfully slow during peak hours. If you’re southbound or headed for the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290), Ontario St is a better option.
