A first look inside The Lofts at River East

If you were to tip the building that houses The Lofts at River East upright, it would tower above some of its high-rise neighbors.

Fortunately for renters looking for a different type of Streeterville abode, the building retains its low-slung posture along the Ogden Slip.

This isn’t actually our first visit to The Lofts at River East. We had a look around early in the construction phase, and we’ve spent some time at Pinstripes. Our history with the building goes all the way back to 1988, when it was known as North Pier and we ran a home show there (video).

The first residents moved into the building recently. Last Friday we had our first look at a model apartment and a few of the amenities.

The amenities package is slated for completion in November. The lobby and a business center with a private conference room are nearly complete, waiting on finishing touches. There will be a multi-level rooftop sundeck with an outdoor theater, fire pits, gas grills and a wet bar. The building will also have a large fitness center with boxing equipment, a screening room and a waterfront lounge.

The building is pet-friendly and has on-site management, maintenance and leasing staff, and 24/7 door staff.

I toured a 2-bedroom, 2 ½ bath apartment with a warm loft aesthetic: exposed brick walls, high ceilings, wood floors, columns, beams and ceilings, large windows, exposed pipes and ductwork, and track lighting.

The kitchen has a raft of touches that distinguish it from what you’ll find in high-rise apartments – starting with its sheer size. The dining area can easily accommodate a table for eight.

Accordion doors at the end of the living area open wide to a large balcony overlooking the Ogden Slip.

Exposed brick walls add warmth to the master suite, which has a long wide hall with two closets connecting to the master bath.

The second bedroom has a large walk-in closet and a spacious en-suite bath with stylish finishes, a wide shower stall, and a vanity with two banks of drawers.

The apartment has what may be the most spacious half-bath you’ll find in a rental apartment in Chicago.

The unit’s large laundry room has space for a folding table and storage.

I also took a brief look at a 1-bedroom apartment.

There are 78 different studio to 3-bedroom floor plans at The Lofts at River East. Floor plans and near real-time rent and availability info can be accessed online.
