A Friday in the East Village, Part 2: On Chicago, Wood, Wolcott and Winchester

by Joseph Askins on 6/16/09

After traversing its borders, Jeremy and I turned inward to the heart of the East Village to check out some of its central arteries and smaller residential streets. Here, we drive down Wood Street and Chicago, Wolcott, and Winchester avenues to see the neighborhood’s mix of old three-flats and new infill condos, as well as one of our regular watering holes.

An interesting thing about that area is that you can see how different types of development were pushed in different wards. The area is split between the 1st and 32nd wards. Matlak and Flores had very different approaches – there are many more rehabs in the 1st and a lot more new construction (both good and bad) in the 32nd. Other than public transit being difficult at rush hour it’s a great area.
