A helicopter view of the Lathrop Homes

Last week we alerted you that plans were moving forward for the redevelopment of the 920-unit Lathrop Homes, a Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) project that has been largely vacant for several years. We included several pictures that showcase the attractiveness of its low-density riverfront site.

The Lathrop homes site is bounded on the east by Damen Ave (2000 W) and Clybourn St, and on the west by the Chicago River. It’s bisected by Diversey Parkway (2800 N) and is across the street from the Lincoln Park Costco.

My son Jordan took the above shot of the Lathrop Homes site on our helicopter tour of Chicago last October. The shot gives you a good look at the project’s proximity to the Kennedy Expressway, at the upper left corner of the photo. Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin recently lamented the repainting in a “dull gray” of the Damen Avenue bridge, at the lower left of the photo.

The Google Earth view, below, affords an even better look at the current low density of the site. Click the images to enlarge them.

A great spot for a river taxi commute to downtown?
