The 1920s were the boom years for courtyard buildings in Chicago, and they’ve been popular ever since. Most have a U-shape, but L-shaped courtyards are also common.
Almost all courtyard buildings have their open space fronting the street. A reverse courtyard, with open space in the back, is far less common.
The corner building at Diversey and Pine Grove, 434-46 W Diversey, has a large rear court that’s fenced and becomes a tranquil, tree-shaded retreat in the summer. Porches opening onto the court provide a great way for residents to get to know one another.
