A walk through Block 37

by Joe Zekas on 11/26/09

The long-awaited opening of the shops at Block 37 has begun. Zara, Puma, Godiva and a few others have opened, but the mall was nearly barren of retail traffic when I visited at around noon the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. And the common areas seemed a bland sensory deprivation chamber calculated to drive visitors (if any appear) into the shops.

In part 2 of the video I wonder whether Block 37 will escape what seems to me to be the fate of every other multi-level indoor mall in the city: retail fail.

I left thinking: Bleak 37.

I stopped by Block 37 late in the afternoon on Wednesday, and found considerably more life. The Steve Madden store-one of the only ones now open-was particularly crowded. It clearly is a mall that will only look truly alive when it the bulk of the retail is open. I say check back again next summer.
