Affordable new condos a half block from popular Chase Park

Chicago’s grand parks may draw more attention, but they can’t match the spirit of community and sense of ownership found in the city’s popular neighborhood parks.

One of the north side’s handful of neighborhood gems is Chase Park, just south of Lawrence Ave between Clark St and Ashland Ave. Chase Park began as a semi-professional baseball field but was abandoned after the opening of Wrigley Field and converted to a park in 1920.

Chase Park’s wide range of facilities and activities belie its modest size. The park hosts an outdoor pool, a 1/5-mile, 4-lane running track with a rubberized surface, two softball fields, four resurfaced tennis courts, a new tree-shrouded soft-surfaced playground, a community garden and a fieldhouse. Chase Park is a seasonal venue for Movies in the Parks, Circus in the Parks, an “Easter Eggstravaganza” and other neighborhood events.

Chase Park’s fieldhouse boasts a well-equipped fitness center, basketball courts, meeting spaces and an auditorium / theater. The fieldhouse hosts men’s, women’s and mixed basketball leagues, both recreational and competitive. A range of programs include well-attended Zumba classes ( $5 fee) led by a certified instructor.

You can get a closer look at the park and its ADA-accessible community garden in the above video.
