Ancora is a 29-story, 452-unit apartment tower under construction at 720 S Wells St in the South Loop. First occupancies are targeted for spring of 2018.
Ancora is the first building in the Riverline development, which will span nearly a half-mile along the south branch of the Chicago River and include 1,000s of apartments and condos and a retail concourse when it is complete.
Details of Ancora’s unit mix and apartments finishes are not yet available.
Views. North and west-facing units at Ancora will have dramatic views of the Willis Tower and the south facade of the Loop skyline.
Views to the east from lower floors will be constrained by the buildings on the east side of Wells Street.
Amenities, services, policies
Ancora will have an extensive amenities package.
Preliminary renderings illustrate a rooftop lounge and terrace, and a landscaped pool deck with private cabanas.
Ancora is one of the closer-to-the-Loop buildings in the South Loop but has one of the near South Loop’s least advantageous locations for proximity to shopping, dining, parks and cultural attractions.
Ancora does have good proximity to the Willis Tower, the Chicago Stock Exchange, the Board of Trade and other financial trading institutions in the Loop.
Ancora is three blocks west of the Printers Row neighborhood. WalkScore gives the location a “Walker’s Paradise” rating of 97 and a “Rider’s Paradise” transit score of 100. The WalkScore ratings for the building are misleading, and are based on information and distance estimates that are just wrong. Ancora does not have walkability and transit access even remotely comparable to other properties with the same scores.
Shopping. Ancora does not have convenient access to a major grocery store.
You’ll have to walk a few blocks from Ancora to gain access to any dining and nightlife venues.
Cactus Bar & Grill, two-and-a-half blocks north of Ancora, is a lively scene when the weather is warm. O’Neil’s on Wells, across the street from Cactus, draws a drinking crowd. Tutto Italiano, a block-and-a-half north of Ancora, is a local favorite for moderately-priced Italian fare.
Once you reach Van Buren St you can head in any direction and find dozens of fast food options and bars and restaurants that cater primarily to Loop workers.
Parks, recreation. Ancora has poor access to public parks and outdoor recreational opportunities. That will change when the Riverline development is completed.
Transportation. The location has good access to public transportation.
The nearest CTA train stop is a Blue Line station at LaSalle and Congress, a 5-minute walk from Ancora. Other nearby CTA stops are at LaSalle and Van Buren and Quincy and Wells, each an 8-minute walk from the building.
The nearest CTA bus routes are several blocks from the building.
Metra’s LaSalle Street Station is near the building and provides access to Chicago’s south side and southern suburbs.
Rentals are typically available in a number of nearby condo buildings, sometimes at lower rents than in the managed apartment buildings. The trade-off is that the condo buildings typically provide fewer amenities.
