Andersonville tries to keep it local

Andersonville has become one of the hottest neighborhoods on the North Side, and chain stores increasingly have eyed the vibrant retail strip on Clark north of Foster for possible locations. According to a new study commissioned by the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce, however, that might not be the best thing for the community.
The study by economic development consultants Civic Economics, looked 10 independently owned retail ventures in Andersonville and compared the results with those gleaned from 10 national chains.

The study found that $73 of every $100 in sales at the independent stores stayed in the local economy. Nationally, the average amount being kept in the local economy from sales at Chain stores such as Olive Garden and Borders was about $43.
