Building a ship in a bottle

The Powerhouse Building, a gorgeous, historically significant remnant of Chicago’s railroad past sat vacant for over 40 years, posing structural and economic challenges that intimidated developers and architects.

Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture had a client who was determined to salvage the building for new uses. Architects Jim Plunkard and Paul Alessandro recently walked us through the Powerhouse Building and talked about how they floated an entirely new structure within the shell of the old one, creating a “ship in a bottle.”

This is one of several videos of the project that we’ll be posting over the next week.
