Chatham has long been one of the South Side’s proudest, most attractive communities. At the beginning of the year The New York Times characterized it as battered but vibrant. Views from 1200 Lake Shore Drive, Libertyville, Chatham

East Lake Shore Drive

Earlier today I visited the rooftop sundeck at 1200 N Lake Shore Dr with Coldwell Banker’s Meladee Hughes. The views were quite a contrast with the home I met her at in Libertyville yesterday morning. My visit to Lake Shore Drive followed a tour of Chatham earlier this afternoon. What a wonderful city we live ...

The Sun-Times begins a series on Chatham

Chatham street scene

Several years ago Barry Pearce and I sat down with the late Dempsey Travis, one of Chicago’s most accomplished citizens, for a wide-ranging discussion. In the above video we talked about his home community, Chatham. Chatham was the crown jewel of Chicago’s African-American community, a carefully manicured, obsessively maintained, aspirational home to middle- and upper-middle ...

The scene was quite a change from my first visit to the site, thirty years earlier, when it housed an A.J. Canfield bottling plant. The Chatham Club isn’t in Chatham, but it was inspired in part by ...

Quote of the day: Wiping away 40 years of progress in Chatham

While to most, this is just another bank failure but if Shorebank fails it will wipe away over 40 years of history and progress of Chatham… Although we now have several commercial banking organizations entering the community, the loss of a true “community bank” like ShoreBank which makes decisions based on what is best for ...
