Chicago rent barometer: North Side for less than $1,000

Wolcott and Farwell

It seems like $1,000 doesn’t go as far as it used to in the rental market these days, so we scanned recent Craigslist posts to see what we could get for less than a grand on the North Side. In Rogers Park, we spotted a rehabbed one-bedroom apartment at Wolcott and Farwell Avenues. The unit, which rents for $900 a month, has granite in the kitchen (pictured) and bathroom, new appliances, and in-unit laundry. Elsewhere in Rogers Park, a one-bedroom at Paulina St and Touhy Ave is available for sublease until next July, and the rent is $765.

Granville and Winthrop

In Andersonville, $900 gets you a one-bedroom apartment on the first floor of a two-flat at Winnemac Ave and Broadway St. If you’re in to sleeping on a futon, small, rehabbed studios (pictured left) are available for a scant $526 in a 13-story building at Granville and Winthrop Avenues in Edgewater. Those units have new kitchens and carpeting, and the rent includes all utilities. And if $526 still seems too steep, studios in a high-rise at 4423 N Sheridan Rd in Uptown start at $516 a month ($300 for the first month), which includes all utilities except electricity.
