Construction checkup: Aqua tops off again, gets first certificate of occupancy

Aqua, 225 N Columbus Drive, viewed from Columbus Drive

A couple bits of news came out from Lakeshore East late this week. Magellan Development and McHugh Construction officially topped off Aqua, 225 N Columbus Dr, this week, despite having actually poured the top floor last month.

More importantly, the 82-story tower has received a certificate of occupancy through floor 32, opening up 14 floors of apartments as well as the lower’s as-of-yet unclaimed hotel space. Approximately 100 of Aqua’s 476 apartments already have leases, according to the project’s blog. Hopefully this all means we’ll get a look inside the building within the next few weeks.

I really love the exterior design as well as the rooftop park with pools, running track etc. BUT what happened to the interiors of the units? Perhaps the rental units are not using the same layouts as the condos, but the rentals are really quite plain and boxy. The kitchens are rather standard if not cheap, though some units do have huge balconies. The rental office is very busy, but these are VERY expensive rental units and this tower reminds me of the buzz that developed about 340-on-the-Park. Right now there are some rentals in the Trump Tower on much higher floors with parking included for a less money with a lot nicer interior finishes as well.

I too love walking by and looking at Aqua in the context of it’s location… however (as bizarre as this may sound) the photo here reminds me of Jabba the Hutt.
