Dempster diving: Buy a pitcher’s pad

by Joseph Askins on 12/11/09

Ryan Dempster

Typically when a ballplayer puts his home on the market, it means there’s a trade on the horizon.* In the case of Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster, who is heading into the second year of a four-year, $52 million contract with nary a trade rumor wafting out of the hot stove, the sale is probably just a sale.

The Tribune reports that one of Dempster’s three homes, a 5,300 square-foot five-bedroom / 4.5-bath single-family in Lake View (probably the one at at 3638 N Wayne Ave, by the looks of it), just went on the market for $2.25 million. D’Aprile Realty’s listing says the four-year-old home has “amazing architectural details,” such as a gourmet kitchen with butler’s pantry and breakfast nook, stone baths, cherry hardwood floors, a cedar sauna room, a wine cellar, four fireplaces, two cedar decks, a hot tub, and a 2.5-car garage. Naturally, Wrigley Field is within walking distance, and the Southport Corridor is just one block to the west.

*Sorry, Cubs fans — no word on a listing for Milton Bradley’s place yet.

I found the Trib’s description of this as a “mansion” amusing, to say the least. The Realtor’s “amazing architectural details” also gave me a good chuckle. These guys need to get out more.

The Tribune is just helping their guy out… and like Boss Daley once said about helping out your own…

Oh, wait… The Tribune sold the only thing worth keeping.

I agree with Joe. The main level and the master bedroom look small for a home at this price. Pricing it 2.250 mil when purchased in the height of the market at 1.715 mil seems out of touch. Good luck with that.
