Evanston, developer spar over 200-year old tree

Orrington & Lincoln, Evanston IL

SoNo’s developer, Smithfield Properties, is mulling a lawsuit against the City of Evanston over stalled plans to develop the long-vacant Kendall College site in northeast Evanston into 19 single-family homes.

The local alderman, it appears, is unequivocally in favor of the project. In Evanston, however, that’s no guarantee that a project will move forward. NITBYs – not in their back yarders – and tree-huggers can be equally as influential as NIMBYs.

The site, as you can see in a frame (above) captured from one of our many video drive-bys, is currently parklike.

Evanstonians love their trees. Offer to move it to a new location or plan around it. Doubt the locals will budge.
