We had tons of fun in recent months devoting weeks to various neighborhoods, such as the South Loop and Wicker Park, and next week we’ll continue the tradition with Pilsen. As always, we’d appreciate your help. Truth is, Pilsen is too big and too interesting a neighborhood for us to scratch the surface in a week. But if some of you chime in and e-mail us stories, opinions, links, photos…we might just have something. As always, you can click on “Comments” below our posts during the week to put your two cents in, and visit our Pilsen forum for a lively discussion.
To get things started, our boundaries for the Near Southwest neighborhood of Pilsen are the Chicago River on the south and east, 16th Street on the north and Damen Avenue on the west. Check out our Pilsen photo album at Flickr, and if you’re into MySpace, visit its active Pilsen group.
By way of background and to get you primed, other pertinent links you might peruse include: art-Pilsen, The National Museum of Mexican Art, PERRO (Pilsen Environmental Rights and Reform Organization), The Pilsen / Little Village Information Center, Pilsen Together Chamber of Commerce, Radio Arte, Turn Here’s Pilsen film, UIC’s Neighborhood Initatives’ Pilsen page, The Encyclopedia of Chicago’s Pilsen page and Pilsen / Southwest Side Greens.

To be accurate, historically, the area east of Halsted was called Prague and predates the Czech/Slav settlement of the area west of Halsted which was a sparsely settled German and Irish area until the Bohemians flooded over into it. The first official recognition of the name “Pilsen” was the naming of the Post Office on Ashland.
Thank you Yo! This is going to be a great week. The picture above typifies what lies below as one of the most beautiful streets in Chicago, 18th!
