Chicago’s rental services would like you to believe that it’s a difficult task to find your best apartment deal in the Streeterville. In fact, it couldn’t be easier to find Streeterville apartments, and working with a rental service may be the best way to ensure that you don’t get your best deal. The rental services won’t show you the buildings that don’t pay them a commission, and they’ll often steer you away from the buildings that pay lower commission rates.

Be sure to print out any coupons for rent discounts – discounts that aren’t available if you work with a rental service.
If you can’t find what you want in a managed rental building, check in at Koenig & Strey, Prudential Rubloff or one of the other major brokerage sites where you can search MLS-listed townhomes (rare, pricey) and condos for rent in Streeterville. Be aware that the rental services, unlike the brokerage firms, will typically not show you condos available for rent. They rarely have them listed, and they hate splitting the commission with the brokers that list them.
North of Chicago Ave
The part of Streeterville north of Chicago Ave was largely developed years earlier than the area south of Chicago, and many of the residential buildings date to the 1920s. It’s common to hear this area referred to as part of the Gold Coast, sometimes as “Gold Coast / Streeterville,” although the traditional Gold Coast doesn’t extend south of the buildings that front East Lake Shore Drive.
The area’s strengths include its pleasant tree-lined streets, proximity to Oak Street Beach, Lake Shore Park, Oak Street and Mag Mile shops, Northwestern’s downtown campus, and immediate access to a vast array of medical, cultural, dining and nightlife venues.
The rental buildings in the area are older, and lack the extensive common-area and in-unit amenities packages found in the newer buildings south of Chicago Ave. They do not have pools, balconies, in-unit washer / dryers, floor-to-ceiling windows, or the dramatic views from some of the newer buildings. Only one has on-site parking, and only one allows dogs. What they often do offer is vintage character, higher ceilings, more spacious layouts, more ample closet space – and a lower price point.
