Irish student programs offer differing takes on Chicago

by Joe Zekas on 5/7/14

It’s the time of year when Irish students post housing wanted ads on Craigslist:

Looking for a 5 bedroom house to rent from the start of June (8th) to mid-August around Lincoln park/Lakeview/Wrigleyville . 3 college graduates and 2 current college undergraduates from Ireland working in Chicago for the summer. Looking for fully furnished house preferably with access to the internet. Any questions feel free to contact. Thanks, Sean

At this time last year we relayed a landlord’s take on Irish summer rentals.

Two organizations that facilitate visas for Irish students looking for summer employment in the US are taking different approaches to Chicago. USIT is warning students away:

Due to difficulties encountered by students obtaining adequate housing and jobs in the Chicago area, USIT advises caution when choosing this destination and for students to have these issues arranged in advance of travel to Chicago.

Hop The Pond is aggressively touting the city’s virtues on its website and on a Facebook page.
