Tower crane operator Ken Derry’s website tells his story in a few apt words: he’s “viewed a Chicago that the rest of us will never see.”
Derry operated one of the cranes that built the Trump Tower and shot dazzling photos from that vantage point. Some of those photos are now available in a coffee-table book.
Derry has posted online more than 100 photos from the tower crane at 73 East Lake, a new apartment tower that’s nearing completion in the Loop. You can see one of them above, and view them all at SmugMug.
When I posted the photo (right) of a crane at the new E2 apartments under construction in Evanston to McHugh Construction’s Facebook page, Star Derry posted a one-word comment on it: “Daddy!”
I hope that means that we can look forward to Derry’s showing us an Evanston we would otherwise never see.
