Live on Chicago’s highest residential floor

A penthouse unit on the 92nd floor of the John Hancock Center has been on the market for about 30 days, priced at $959,000. It’s being sold as 1,730 square feet of raw space “ready to be built out.”

The listing for Unit 9208 has some artful phrasing, describing its location as “the highest residential floor in the city.” That’s doubtless with an eye on the Trump Tower penthouse, which is only on the 89th floor, but may be at a higher elevation.

Several other phrases in the listing will resonate with people familiar with the Hancock’s history – “all asbestos has been removed” and “operable window.” Looking back to prior decades, asbestos abatement was once a major issue in the building and there was also a major controversy over whether the original lack of operable windows on the residential floors violated the city’s building code.

Unit 9108 has also been on the market for about 30 days, priced at $1.2M. It’s 22 square feet larger than unit 9208, reflecting the building’s tapering facade.
