Yesterday we mentioned that architect Benjamin Marshall both designed and built the Drake Tower. Marshall also pulled double duty on 209 E Lake Shore Dr. Since its 1925 completion, 209 E Lake Shore Dr has stood as one of Chicago’s most expensive residential buildings. In
Chicago Apartments: A Century of Lakefront Luxury
, Neil Harris notes, “the 1925 bond issue appraised the building and property at more than $4 million.”

Koenig and Strey lists a 12th-floor condo at just under $5 million in March 2006. The master bedroom features separate “his ‘n’ hers” dressing rooms. The butler pantry and private library help the interior achieve the depth of luxury that has always offset the building’s understated brick and limestone exterior, widely considered the most austere of the E Lake Shore Dr high-rises. Marshall designed and built 209, but Chicago architect Tony Grunsfeld designed this particular condo.
