Inside the historic mansions of River North

Last week we told you about the three historic mansions that The Habitat Company is marketing in River North. Yo’s truly peeked inside the homes recently and can report that they need a lot of work, but feature some lovely old architectural details. Until recently, the homes were used as the offices of the Scottish Rite Association. Think scratchy carpet, faux wood panels, acoustic tile ceilings, fluorescent lights and even metal drinking fountains.
On the bright side, original features include a white marble fireplace and ornate ceilings and walls with dentil moldings and 24-carat gold details. Pictured is the living room of the Carpenter Home, 921 N Dearborn St, and a detail of a fireplace at the Taylor Home (both photos by Craig Skorburg). The bay windows of the Carpenter Home look out on Washington Square Park.Click for larger image How much would one of these rambling old mansions set you back? The Carpenter is priced at $3.8 million, the Taylor Home is a steal at $3.6 million and the Thompson Residences is available for $3.9 million. The homes are currently owned by The Enterprise Companies and Mesirow Financial Real Estate, joint developers of the Walton on the Park high-rise, which will be located east of the mansions.
