Modernist Atrium Home in Kenwood listed for $369K

The uninitiated will wonder why Jeanne Spurlock of Century 21 Kennedy Ryan is marketing a drab brick bunker near Madison Park and Dorchester Avenue in Kenwood. Fans of Modernist architecture, on the other hand, may look at the home above and immediately recognize the work of a kindred spirit.

This is the exterior of the Atrium Homes, designed in 1961 by Mies understudy Y.C. Wong. “The windowless street facades give no clue to the light-filled interiors of these Modernist town houses,” says the AIA Guide to Chicago. “Each is oriented to a glass-walled atrium deep within. With their severe tan brick walls, beams for cornices, and simple doors, they have been praised as ‘the ulitmate in reticence.'”

1380 E Madison Park, listed last week at $369,000, is a three-bedroom / two-bath unit with 1,400 square feet. According to Spurlock’s listing, it’s one of just two units in the Atrium Homes that has a basement. The home features floor-to-ceiling windows which open onto a private patio, a mix of vinyl and carpet flooring, in-unit laundry, gas heating, and central air conditioning.

2009 taxes were $4,588 with homeowner and senior exemptions; monthly assessments are $117.
