New Chicago Web site helps find free or cheap drinks

MyOpenBarHere at Yo, we often work up a mighty thirst arguing about Chicago real estate and neighborhoods, which is why we were oh-so-pleased to find that the MyOpenBar network has spread to Chicago. Lovers of free and cheap booze rejoice!

Chicago MyOpenBar is new to Chicago but the simple concept behind this Web site already has started to generate a buzz around town. Events with open bars, or at least damn good drink deals, are compiled into a weekly calendar. Readers can browse the Chicago calendar or sign up to receive it in a weekly e-mail. Venue owners, event promoters and open-bar enthusiasts are all encouraged to submit their deals and events for the calendar.
The MyOpenBar network has prided itself on being selective about the events it lists. Basically, the twenty-somethings who run the site choose events that they would likely attend with their friends, so readers are more likely to read about a loft party in Wicker Park than a ladies night in the Gold Coast. But the site doesn’t just list events that will result in half-naked hipsters pouring Pabst Blue Ribbon all over themselves. It sometimes takes on classier affairs, such as art openings and theatre benefits. As long as the event is appealing to a hip, young demographic, it’s fair game.

So get on the site, and celebrate free booze today and a free hangover tomorrow.
Full disclosure: Yo contributor Sarah Dahnke is the co-editor of Chicago MyOpenBar, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a damn good idea that we wouldn’t have told you about anyway.
