Quote of the day: A farewell to the "wow factor"

by Joseph Askins on 11/4/08

“It’s an architecture of excess, a consequence of there being too much money around… At a time when people are worried about other things, those things become really irritating, and probably less relevant. So I think we will see a mood shift — a certain sensibility coming back.”

- Architect David Chipperfield, predicting a decline in “attention-seeking buildings” in an article from Bloomberg.com.

Considering the subdued nature of Mr. Chipperfield’s designs, I’d say this statement is a little self-serving.

Real estate development is very long cycle. Chicago still has a lot of attention seeking buildings in the pipeline that aren’t scheduled to be up until 2009-2011. So I think despite the RE and economic downturn we’re facing our skyline is going to become more attention seeking over the next couple of years.

I’d like to see some more “attention seeking” designs on the North Side.. actually outside of the downtown area. I hope “sensible” doesn’t mean the continuation of cinderblock crap with brick facades that we get.
