Streeterville’s best apartments – Boutique ambiance

Earlier posts in our series on the best Streeterville apartments focused on location. We spotlighted the buildings with the best views and most convenient access to grocery shopping, bars and restaurants, retail shops, public transportation, parks and beaches and the expressway grid, and the shortest walk to the Loop.

We then switched from location to the buildings themselves, beginning with affordability and building amenities.

There are certain renters – you know who you are – who want to come home to a high-rise that feels dignified without being stuffy, posh but not pushy about it and small enough that everyone can feel big. They want a building, in short, with a boutique personality and ambiance. And they want it to be in a location that’s unabashedly affluent.

The renovation of 850 Lake Shore Drive into 198 apartments is nearing completion and we haven’t been able to visit it yet, but the building appears to be the standout in the “boutique ambiance” category.

The Beaux Arts 850 Lake Shore Drive was designed by Jarvis Hunt in 1927. It began its life as a private athletic club and was for a while a university dorm. Much of the original club feel is being restored in the building’s renovation.
