CTA Red Line
Bryn Mawr isn’t the last stop for northbound riders on the Red Line, but it will be the last stop for me in this Riding the Red Line video series. The ‘L’ station is located in Edgewater’s Bryn Mawr Historic District and is used by more than 1.5 million passengers per year. Watch all 20 ...

Today’s Red Line segment looks at the Berwyn ‘L’ station, located on the southern edge of Edgewater. It’s a busier station than Argyle, has a very strong WalkScore thanks to a number of stores located along Broadway, and is just two short blocks away from Lincoln Park.

Last Friday I made my way to the Argyle Red Line station, located in a part of Uptown known as the West Argyle Street Historic District, New Chinatown, Little Saigon, or Little Vietnam. The Argyle ‘L’ station is just a couple blocks north of the Lawrence station, the last one I visited, and just three ...

Today’s stop: the Wilson Red Line station in Uptown. It only smelled a little on the day I shot footage. Watch all of my Riding the Red Line videos at YouTube.

The Sheridan Red Line station, located just south of Irving Park Road, is the subject of today’s Riding the Red Line video. Like the Belmont station, it’s close enough to Wrigley Field (0.4 miles in this case) to be a kind of “release valve” for traffic that would otherwise converge at the Addison station. (Sheridan ...

The Red Line’s stop in Lake View (for riders traveling out from downtown, at least) is at Belmont, a station that bears a strong resemblance to the Fullerton station in Lincoln Park. The station is also fed by traffic from the Brown Line and Purple Line Express, resulting in just under 4 million passengers passing ...

Travel north on the Red Line from 35th Street and you’ll end spend a lot of time underground. All of downtown’s Red Line stations are underground, and the train does not return to elevated tracks until after it passes the North / Clybourn station. Fullerton is the first Red Line station on the North Side ...

The last subway station a northbound rider on the Red Line will encounter is the newly renovated North / Clybourn stop at the border of Lincoln Park and the Near North Side. In return for advertising rights and exclusive use of a bus turnaround, Apple agreed to refurbish the station’s exterior, interior, and platforms in ...

Below the intersection of Clark and Division streets is the next-to-last subway station that riders pass through when traveling north on the Red Line. Walk east from the Clark / Division station, and you’ll soon encounter the clubs along Division and Rush streets; walk west, and you’ll find Old Town. Keep up with all of ...

The Red Line station at Chicago Avenue and State Street is a lot like the one at Grand and State, only without all the orange barrels, concrete barriers, and plywood walls. In fact, the two stations are almost identical in design. The Chicago station is still in what we consider River North, but isn’t too ...

Yes, Grand is still a mess. The Red Line station at Grand Avenue and State Street has been a construction zone for years, and will continue to be one through the rest of 2011. Its massive renovation plans call for expanded mezzanines, extra turnstiles, new granite floors and stairs, new tile walls, new elevators and ...

Today’s segment from my video series on Red Line stations is from the Lake station, located below State Street between Lake and Randolph in the Loop. As of 2009, it was the busiest Red Line station in the Loop, serving almost 5 million riders. From Lake, travelers can transfer free to the Brown, Green, Orange, ...

The next stop on my trip up the Red Line was the Monroe subway station near the intersection of Monroe and State in the Loop. It’s so close to the Jackson station that I didn’t actually take the train to get there — I just walked to the next block. You can keep up with ...

I started the second leg of my tour up the Red Line with a look at the Jackson station, which stretches underneath State Street from Van Buren to Adams. The station — the first Loop station northbound travelers will reach — is one of the line’s busiest, due to the fact that riders can transfer ...

The first leg of my video tour up the Red Line ended at the Harrison station, the second stop (from south to north) along the line’s section of subway running underneath State Street. The station sees more traffic per year than the Roosevelt station, perhaps due to the number of college students who pass through ...

The third stop on my tour of the Red Line was the Roosevelt station near Roosevelt Road and State Street in the South Loop. Traveling north from the South Side, Roosevelt is the first subway station that riders encounter. The surrounding neighborhood is more dense than the areas around the Cermak/Chinatown or Sox/35th stations, but ...

My next stop on the way north via CTA’s Red Line was the Cermak / Chinatown station, located at 138 W Cermak Rd. Due to construction on the station’s Cermak side, I exited the station onto Archer Avenue and shot this profile from the intersection of Archer and Wentworth. Just a handful of homes have ...

Last Wednesday I started what will be an ongoing project through the next month or two: a series of videos profiling each Red Line station between Bridgeport and Rogers Park. I started off near the Sox / 35th station, located between the northbound and southbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway, and started traveling north. ...
