Tales from the rental front: leaving the roommates behind

Lisa pic.jpgWhen Lisa shifted from always living with roommates to renting an apartment on her own, she discovered the ups and downs of having the space all to herself, including the temptation to let dirty dishes pile up in the sink.

Yo: How has your living situation changed in the past year?

Lisa: Previously I lived with a roommate in Lincoln Park near the corner of Racine and Webster, and now I live in Lake View. The area where I lived in Lincoln Park was very residential and quiet as opposed to the hustle and bustle of Lake View. I loved my apartment in Lincoln Park, but I think the one I currently live in is more suitable for me. I am within walking distance to wonderful restaurants and shops and live even closer to work. The rent is also cheaper, which is a definite plus. And I somehow managed to find a place in Lake View that is so quiet that I never have a problem falling asleep because of the noise factor.

Yo: What are the ups and downs of living alone?

Lisa: For the most part, I really enjoy living alone. I make my own decisions as to when I want to clean, cook, take a shower etc. I’ve found out that living with good friends can bring tension at times and that it’s best not to have to live with that person 24/7. On the other hand, it can get lonely, especially coming back home after work and not having anyone to talk to.

Yo: If you had to pick the best thing about living alone, what would it be?

Lisa: I can make my own decisions. If I’m feeling lazy about doing the dishes, I don’t have to feel guilty about it if I’m living alone. Also, there are occasions when I just want to relax or go to bed early. It’s not easy doing that when you have a roommate who wants to invite people over or have parties.
