The Donald isn't laughing about this condo development

by sarah dahnke on 9/22/06

Get ready. As if there aren’t enough luxury high-rise buildings already on their way up, Chicagoist reports today that the building formerly known as the Fordham Spire is scheduled to break ground in early 2007 and be completed in 2010. So now you can stop saying, “They’re not going to build that thing.” (And Trump can start throwing a real hissy fit.)

The crazy twisty skyscraper was given the dull and uninspiring name of 400 North Lake Shore Drive after the property was sold from The Fordham Company to Irish developer Garrett Kelleher. It is still slated to be 124 stories high and contain a 20-story, five-star hotel and 50,000 square feet of retail space. No word on what stores are slated to occupy what may be the most expensive downtown real estate to date. Any suggestions? Or how about a cooler name for the soon-to-be tallest building in North America?

This project is a long way off from starting construction. If it actually happens (still a huge question mark at this point), a reasonable estimate for the start of construction might be mid to late 2008.

Yeah, I was surprised to hear Shelbourne Development saying it would happen so early. But that’s what their press release (linked above) claims. Why do you guess 2008, Sam?

Now that I actually read the press release, I’m gonna go ahead and push groundbreaking back a year to 2009. The release said virtually nothing that is new. Although today’s date was given, it could have just as easily been July 22, or whenever the news of Shelbourne making the purchase came out.
