The rent now sign on SoNo is so no more

by Joe Zekas on 1/16/13

The bright red RENT NOW sign atop SoNo, 860 W Blackhawk, has been a fixture in the Clybourn Corridor sky for about a year.

The sign solicited renters for SoNo East, the adjacent 324-unit apartment tower at 840 W Blackhawk. The sale of SoNo East closed late last year, extinguishing the rights to retain the sign on SoNo. SoNo East, in any event, had already reached 85% occupancy at the time of the closing.

A tipster informed me late yesterday in an email that the sign has been removed from the building.

I’ve photographed the sign, I’d estimate, from dozens of different vantage points, and offer a few shots for those who may have missed it.

Finally. Isn’t there (or shouldn’t there) be an ordinance against this kind of blight?

It requires a permit, so in theory neighbors could complain. Though I, for once, miss the old neon signs on Michigan Avenue.

An update on the leasing? Have they hit 90%?
