The 5-story, 71-unit Scott Residences at 211 W Scott St in Old Town broke ground in the summer of 2013 and began occupancy late in 2014.

The building includes 72 parking spots and ground-level retail space with Starbucks and Massage Envy as tenants..

The developer is Harlem-Irving Cos with JDL Development.

The apartments

The unit mix includes convertible, 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments. Floor plans and rent ranges are available online.

The apartments have 9-foot or higher ceilings, hardwood floors throughout, built-in desks and in-unit washer / dryers. Select units have balconies or terraces.

Kitchens have “European inspired” cabinetry, granite countertops, glass tile backsplashes and GE Artistry appliances.

Baths have nice-sized vanities and ceiling-height tile tub surrounds.

The Scott Residences isn’t a view building due to its height, but east-facing balconies offer a partial skyline view and a good vantage point overlooking Wells Street.

Amenities, services, policies

Scott Residences has an unusually high level of service for a property its size.

The building has 24/7 door staff and on-site management and leasing staff. There’s a reception area with a billiards table and flat-screen TV just off the lobby entrance.

The resident lounge / party room is on the top floor. It has multiple seating areas, a fireplace, and a catering kitchen.

There’s a fitness room adjacent to the resident lounge.

A large rooftop terrace / sun deck has a grilling area and wraps around three sides of the building.

The location

The Scott Residences is at the corner of Scott and Wells Streets.

Wells Street north of Division St (1200 N) is one of the most interesting and attractive pedestrian-scale venues in Chicago.

Nearly all of the funky vibe that made the strip a tourist mecca in the 60s and 70s has vanished, but a few traces remain.

Neighborhood festivals, highlighted by the wildly popular Wells Street Art Festival and Old Town Art Fair, add to the location’s area-wide appeal.

Shopping. Grocery shopping doesn’t get much more convenient than having Plum Market, a full-service high-end grocer across the street. Jewel is a few blocks west on Division St, and the original Treasure Island is a few blocks north on Wells St. A new Target recently opened on Division St. Walgreens pharmacies are nearby on Division St and Wells St.

There’s a seasonal farmers market on Division St, a short walk from the building.

Wells Street is home to an eclectic array of boutiques and other retail establishments. Big-box retailing is available at the nearby Clybourn Corridor, and Scott Residences is within walking distance of Oak Street boutiques and Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile shops.

Dining, nightlife. Wells Street is a destination restaurant row.

Wells Street’s broad sidewalks host a wide and growing variety of eating and drinking establishments.

Zanies Comedy Club and Second City are a few blocks north on Wells St.

Just east along Division St is another strip of bars and restaurants. Head a block south on State St toward Rush St and the dining and nightlife scene intensifies even further.

Parks, recreation.
Oak Street and North Avenue beaches and the best of Chicago’s fabulous Lincoln Park are a short walk from Scott Residences.

Ball fields and playgrounds are nearby at Seward Park, at a local elementary school and at Walter Payton College Prep.

Transportation. Public transportation is excellent. The Division Street Red Line stop is two short blocks from the building for quick connections to the Loop and Wrigley Field.

North / south and east / west CTA bus routesare a block from 1225.

Cross-town access to I-90/94 on Division St can be time-consuming, but southbound travelers may save time by heading for the Ontario St on-ramp.

The competition

You might also consider condos for rent in nearby buildings – they’re occasionally available at lower rents than you’ll find in the rental buildings, in part because they don’t offer comparable amenities packages.
