Carol Dorsey and Mark "First-Time" Boyer tour resales: Part IV

Friday, July 18th, 2008

After looking at some vintage lofts in Printers Row and a condo conversion in the South Loop, Carol Dorsey from Prudential SourceOne Realty took me over to the West Loop to have a look at a newer condo (but a resale, nevertheless). There, at 1001 W Madison St we looked at a two-bedroom corner unit that was recently reduced to the $390s. Stay tuned for the fifth part of the "First-Time Boyer" series, which will be posted on YoChicago soon.

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

After visiting a couple of Printers Row lofts with Carol Dorsey from Prudential SourceOne Realty, we hoofed it down to the Crane Building at 888 S Michigan Ave in the South Loop. There, Dorsey showed me a one-bedroom condo and took me up to the common roof deck that looks out on Grant Park.

Tough times in Bridgeport?

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

You think you have it bad? Try selling real estate in Bridgeport. In the second video from our trip to Da Mare's old 'hood, Donna Murray of Gordon Realty says that she hasn't made a sale in 18 months. Talk about deathly. Press play to get Donna's take on the Bridgeport market and see more of the neighborhood from the comfort of Dave Samber's minivan.

Carol Dorsey and Mark "First-Time" Boyer tour resales: Part I

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

After visiting a few sales centers for new-construction high-rises, I realized that we were going about things all wrong. This first-time buyer wasn't looking for granite countertops or "the Ferrari of kitchen cabinetry." What I really sought was a big space with lots of natural light for a bargain price. So Carol obliged me, and took me on a tour of resales, starting with the Donahue Building at 711 S Dearborn St in Printers Row.

Buying a new-construction home

Monday, July 14th, 2008

In this final video of my interview with Carol Dorsey of Prudential SourceOne Realty, we discuss some of the basic differences between buying a condo before or after the building has been constructed. We also talk about the impact that investors and rental units can have on a condo development, and becoming involved when the condo association takes over the building.

Who is your agent working for anyway?

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

In the third part of my sit-down interview with Carol Dorsey of Prudential SourceOne Realty, I took the opportunity to ask about some nagging questions that I had about real-estate transactions, relating specifically to agent loyalty. Dorsey answers questions about the value of real-estate attorneys, dual agency, and how agent commissions work.

Inside one of Vetro's two-bedrooms

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

In all the time that we've covered Roszak / ADC's Vetro, none of our staff has ever made it over for an actual tour of the building. Earlier this week, I met up with Millie Rosenbloom, a broker associate with Baird & Warner and the head of Vetro's new marketing team, to take a look at one of the high-rise's two-bedroom-plus-den units. Vetro is about 45 percent sold, and most units are ready for immediate delivery, Rosenbloom says.

It was a dreary day outside, so we didn't get a chance to look at the Vetro's outdoor terrace, but I plan to return in the next few days to do a follow-up on the building's amenities.

"First-Time Boyer" finds an agent

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

After visiting a few sales centers donning my first-time buyer hat, I had so many questions for Carol Dorsey that we decided to sit down in her Prudential SourceOne Realty office to discuss some of the basics of home shopping. In this first segment, we discuss finding an agent, the rules that govern buyer-agent relationships, and why a buyer even needs an agent.
