Cafe Duvall brings culture to the Heart of Italy
Posted 3/23/2007 by Mark DaltonCafe Duvall (2257 W 23rd Pl) may not be Italian, but it's playing an important role in the neighborhood surrounding the Heart of Italy. Watch as Jacqueline Cahill shows us around Bill Duvall's one-of-a-kind cafe.

Kate - I believe that the correct name for this neighborhood is "Heart of Chicago." At least that's what the sign along I-55 says.

And, of course, your correct name is Mark. Sorry.
Joe Zekas said:
Heart of Italy is part of Heart of Chicago, which in turn is part of Lower West Side.

Anon, you are right about Heart of Chicago (and the sign on 55). But, Heart of Italy is a sub-neighborhood centered around Oakley Avenue from 24th to Blue Island Ave. So technically, it isn't in Heart of Italy, but it's only about a quarter of a block away and part of the business district.

Good grief - all these "hearts!" Geographically speaking is this the true "heart" as in "center" of Chicago?

yes, indeed, Heart of Chicago is located pretty much at the geographical center of Chicago, pre-O'Hare.

The neighborhood is named "Pilsen", not "Heart of Italy."

Sandy,
Hardly anyone considers Pilsen as extending that far west. It's a distinct area in this pocket.

Actually, most people consider Pilsen to be this far west Joe. How many people go around saying Heart of Italy or Chicago? Not too many Joe.

UICstudent,
You can't help parading your ignorance, can you?
Have you been to that area and talked to the people who live and do business there? I have.
Just get your butt over there and try to find anyone there who won't gleefully kick your butt all the way back to Pilsen if you try to tell them they live in Pilsen.
Go to Ignotz's and tell the owner he lives in Pilsen. His family's only been there for 100 years and he thinks "nobody calls it Pilsen." He must have been talking about you - nobody.
If Ignotz's owner isn't around, head to Miceli's Deli. If these ladies are there, try to tell them they live in Pilsen. They'll kick your butt too.
