River East spawns ugly salmon-colored RiverView II

riverviewblog.jpgMCL Companies is hyping its River East development (mixed-use project on 13 acres bounded by the river, Grand Avenue, Columbus Drive and Lake Shore Drive), as the Platinum Coast. It does seem like a pretty cool place to live. The company has developed the old North Pier Terminal into River East Plaza, a 500,000-square-foot complex of shops and office space. It includes a Fox and Obel and the River East Art Center, a mixed-use project of galleries and retail. However, it’s a pity that such a high-profile project is marred by the aesthetics of the condo tower RiverView II, 401 E North Water St. Its curved form is elegant, but the salmon-colored strips down the building cheapen it. Same goes for the original RiverView tower. What was architect De Stefano + Partners thinking?
