Park Monroe's face-lift creates dualistic disaster
Posted 9/13/2006 by JoelWe've speculated on what the tremendous office building at 55 E Monroe St will look like when its top half gets a nip/tuck to create The Park Monroe, but now developers are giving us a decent visual rendering of the horror. Now, rather than sit back and pass judgment on the building's new form (woops… too late), we're going to let yo'all do it. Tell us what you think.

I don't get to use this word very often—I'm flabbergasted. This is hideous. This just says 'fuck Chicago's architectural legacy, let's drop some shit all over the skyline.' Just horrible. It's astonishing to think that people in this day and age wouldn't know better… that goes for the developers and the buyers! I would imagine even an average person would realize that those balconies 'f-up the facade and ARE NOT AESTHETICALLY PLEASING! How have we come so far? Greed, ignorance, apathy or all three?

I am one of the few that actually likes 55 E Monroe's current exterior. Yes it is monolithic, and monstrous, but it is classic late mid-century modernism (1972)
I am sickened by what they are proposing for the changes to the facade. It will look absolutely ridiculous. What is even worse are the floor plans they are proposing… nearly all of the units on the west side have those interior window-less bedrooms. These aren’t lofts, how is this luxury?

The rendering is, um, gross, to say the least. Not creative at all.

This is one building that actually makes me LIKE the term "tear down."
