Will there be blue skies for The Azure Tower in the South Loop?

Posted 8/11/2006 by Joel

Azure Tower

It may not be on the same scale as Park 1000 or Park Michigan, but South Michigan Avenue is gearing up to bear another high-rise: The Azure Tower, at 1330 S Michigan Ave. Concept Developers has yet to set prices for the 18-story tower, which will have 130 condos with one or two bedrooms. Sizes range from a 707 square-foot unit with a 108 square-foot balcony to a 1,625 square-foot penthouse with a 1,104 square-foot terrace (there are four penthouses on the top floor). Check out the Web site for some pretty cool 3-D renderings of the different floor plans. We all know how the South Loop is burgeoning, but we also hear the endless talk of the coming crash, so how do you think the tower will fare? And furthermore, what's the deal with that adornment at the top of the building? Anyone have an opinion on the architectural ram horns?

What an ugly building. It deserves to be in Miami, not on Michigan Avenue.

Ugly? No. AIA award winner? Also no.
If you would like to see ugly, examine Pappageorge/Haymes body of work in the immediate vicinity - Michigan Ave. Towers 1 and 2, Vision on State, Museum Park Towers 1 and 2. And not to forget the most hideous of all (and amazingly it's not even a P/H design!!) - Marquee Michigan Avenue. I'll take a Miami building anyday over - what is it called again?f - contemporary art deco??

Again, there are much, much, much worse offenders marring the cityscape than this project. I say, save the harsh criticism for the real troublemakers - all the heinous neo-traditional, postmodern, unchicago-worthy schlock that is out there. Granted the problem was worse 5 years ago, and the city has finally begun to advocate for modern innovation, but there is way to much siliness still going on on the skyline.

it's a shame if you're going to build new condo's look towards the future.
