D’Amato, a professor of photography at Columbia College, paid a serendipitous visit to the neighborhood in the late ’80s, and he spent the next 14 years photographing its streets, families, gangs and graffiti. The book includes 90 color photographs and D’Amato’s account of his time in the neighborhood. Stuart Dybek, the award-winning short-story writer and Pilsen native, pens the foreword.
