Wish I had an image from this vantage point from 40 years ago.
I can remember the first time I passed through Chicago, in August of 1962. Went to the Prudential Building which, if I recall correctly, was then the tallest building in the city.
Up until the late 60's though the Prudential was the most prominent building in the skyline. It was the first highrise built in Chicago since about 1935. It went up in 1955.
Compare that to the last ten years in highrise construction. It is a world of difference.
I hear people make that claim about the Prudential building all of the time. Even the media is prone to say the Prudential was the tallest for several years. But the Board of Trade is taller, and it's older. So the Prudential was NEVER the tallest building in the city. I think it just had the most popular observation deck for a while.

Apparently the Board of Trade building is a few feet taller than the Prudential.
List of tallest buildings in Chicago.
