Union rat pickets non-union Union

by Joe Zekas on 3/11/11

I rarely venture outside without a camera, but I didn’t have one with me earlier today as I headed for lunch at HopHaus, a block from our River North office.

We spied an inflatable rat outside a new restaurant in the commercial space at Flair Tower, a recently-completed rental high-rise. A picketer from Cement Masons Local 502 informed me that a non-union concrete contractor was involved in the project.

The rat was deflated and being packed up by the time I returned with a camera.

The restaurant’s deliciously ironic name: Union.

And what are they picketing for?? Did the restaurant cheat them or something? I doubt it; the restaurant probably simply hired whom they wanted, which in our free market is permitted.
