If you’re in the market for a loft but you’re not thrilled about living in a former industrial building, this two-bedroom two-bath unit inside a former church at 1658 W Superior St might be for you.
The loft has hardwood floors, spiral ductwork and exposed brick. The kitchen includes standout features in a competitive resale market: custom birch cabinets, a recycled glass-tile backsplash, concrete counters and cork flooring. An open floor plan, oversized windows and a private patio lend an airy feel.
On the down side, a monthly assessment of $284 seems a bit high, and the $3,227 tax bill will no doubt be adjusted to reflect the sale price of the home. Greg Desmond of Rubloff has the property listed for $429,000.

What was the original name and denomination of the church?
I am guessing it was something other than a Catholic church. It isn’t until recently that the parishes in that area have been weakening. The Hispanics and Eastern Europeans have supported them and continue to do so. That Catlick joint on Noble closed and is going condo, I thought? Then that other Catlick joint on Western is too.
You are referring, of course, to the old St. Boniface Church on Noble St. (BTW today is St. B’s feast day on the Catholic calendar), and Our Lady of Good Counsel on Western just south of Augusta. (No mystery as to why it closed several years ago; too much competition from St. Helen’s, St. Stephen’s and Holy Rosary, all nearby.)
Maybe the catlick church sold the building to pay for some of their other liabilities, if you know what I mean….
