Where have all the homeless gone?

According to a recent report (pdf file) from the National Alliance to End Homelessness, Chicago had 6,680 homeless in January, 2005. According to a story in the Chicago Tribune, this was down from about 9,600 in 2004.

The National Alliance count is less than one-third of the number of homeless on a typical night reported in a recent study (doc file) from the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, which has a different way of counting the homeless.

Illinois, according to the National Alliance report, has a low rate of homelessness among the 50 states.

In an earlier post on the subject, I wondered there are too many organizations chasing too few homeless to too little effect in Chicago. At the least, it appears that substantial year-to-year progress has been made in reducing homelessness in Chicago.
