1100 North Dearborn is a 20-story, 247-unit Gold Coast high-rise. The building was completed in 1930.
McNally & Quinn was the architecture firm that designed 1100 North Deareborn.
The brick building has some limestone trim, but it’s sparsely ornamented compared to nearby buildings built in the same era. Bands of thin limestone columns rise from the base to emphasize the building’s height. The minimalism of the façade is almost modernist.
Dark-blue awnings make the building recognizable from a distance. A dark-blue canopy cantilevers from the building to the sidewalk to shelter residents from wet weather.
The apartments
1100 North Dearborn tower has a mix of mostly studio and one-bedroom apartments, with a few two-bedrooms. Floor plans are available online.
The apartments were renovated some years ago and have 9-foot ceilings, crown moldings and hardwood parquet floors. Some of the units have built-in bookcases.
Apartments typically have small kitchens with gas ranges and an adjacent dining area.
Closet space varies from marginal to good. The apartments have radiator heat and window air-conditioning units.
Views. Some of the higher-floor apartments have decent skyline views, but most of the units have very limited views.
Amenities, services, policies
1100 North Dearborn, typical of Gold Coast vintage buildings, has a limited suite of common-area amenities and no on-site parking.
The building has a rooftop deck, a fitness room, a laundry room and a bike storage area.
A cleaners, shoe repair shop, salon and swimwear store are on the first floor of the building.
The building has on-site management and maintenance, and 24-hour door staff. Cats are welcome; dogs aren’t.

A new Jewel Foods, two blocks north and one block west, is under construction at 1200 N Clark St and is slated to open summer 2017.
