1550 North State: old-school starchitecture

1550 N State 1.jpgWe posted an item earlier this week about some homebuyers’ tendency to talk of themselves as living “in a Helmut Jahn,” or a Mies, or whichever starchitect designed their building.

With our history of prominent architects, Chicago has long been an epicenter of starchitecture. Living in a cutting-edge Jahn or iconic Mies certainly has its merits, but there’s something to be said for the throwback prestige of places like 1550 N State, designed by Benjamin Marshall, who also gave us 209 E Lake Shore Drive and the Drake Tower. Built in 1916, the A3 unit at 1550 N State has three bedrooms and two baths, plus old-school touches like a private, gated entrance into a landscaped garden. Despite the property’s retro charms, Baird and Warner seeks a distinctly contemporary price of $995,000.
