(Visited 3,268 times, 1 visits today)

The 50-story, 389-unit 215 West opened for occupancy at 215 W Washington St in the first quarter of 2010, ending a nearly 20-year drought in apartment construction in the Loop.

One dramatic feature of the building is a steel truss that supports a 35-story section of 215 West that overhang its low-rise neighbor to the east.

The development team included Jupiter Realty as the developer, Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB) as the architect and McHugh Construction as the general contractor. SCB also designed 200 Squared, which also opened in 2010 just two blocks north of 215 West.

The building includes ground-level retail space and a separately-owned 600-space parking garage.

The apartments

Floor plans are available online for the building’s studio, convertible, 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments.

Apartments have floor-to-ceiling windows, walk-in and walk-through closets, carpeted living and bedroom areas, and in-unit washers and dryers. Only a very few have private outdoor space.

Kitchens are all-electric and include granite countertops and a stainless-steel appliance package with built-in microwave.

The apartments have individual control of heating and air-conditioning with no seasonal restrictions.

Furnished short-term rentals in the building are available through ExecuStay, Habitat Corporate Suites, Manilow Suites, Premier Luxury and VIP Corporate Housing.

Views. The view corridors from almost all of the building’s apartments are blocked by neighboring buildings. View shots from various floors are online at the building’s website.

Amenities, services, policies

The building has a solid amenities package, including a 14th floor landscaped terrace with an outdoor pool, garden and grills.

There’s a fitness center with cardio and weight-training equipment, a resident lounge, a media room and a business center and library. A multi-purpose room can host parties, yoga or fitness classes. The building has separate personal and bike storage areas.

215 West is a smoke-free building with on-site leasing and management staff, and 24/7 door staff. Cats and dogs are accepted, subject to limits. The on-site parking garage is separately owned.

Location

215 West has a convenient location that’s within an easy walk of any point in the Loop.

Shopping. A 7-Eleven convenience store is a few steps from 215 West. The nearest full-service grocery, City Target, is five blocks away and the grocery department is on the second floor.

There’s a Mariano’s nearly a mile to the east another nearly a mile to the west, about the same distance as the nearest Jewel. The farmers market at Daley Plaza is a seasonal favorite.

A CVS pharmacy is across the street from 215 West and a Walgreens is a block south.

215 West residents have quick access to State Street shops and are only a few minutes from North Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile shops.

Dining, nightlife. There are abundant options in the immediate area, but many cater heavily to office workers and tourists. The thriving River North restaurant, bar and nightlife scene is a few short blocks to the north, across the Chicago River.

Parks, recreation. Proximity to parks and outdoor recreational activities is not one of 215 West’s strengths.

Millennium Park and Grant Park begin six blocks to the east, but the Loop is otherwise a park desert.

The expanding Chicago Riverwalk is a few short blocks north of 215 West.

The Loop’s theatre district is steps from the property. The Art Institute, Lyric Opera and Chicago Symphony are a few minutes away.

Transportation. Public transportation is excellent. The CTA El stop at Wells and Washington serves 4 different routes, including Orange Line access to Midway Airport. The nearby Pedway enables all-weather access to the Red Line and the Blue Line to O’Hare Airport.

CTA bus routes in the area provide citywide connections.

Taxi service is near-instantaneous at the front door. A Zipcar car-sharing location is on-site.

I-90/94 and I-290 can generally be reached within a few minutes.

The competition

You might also consider condos for rent in – they’re occasionally available at lower rents than you’ll find in the rental buildings.
