2850 North Sheridan is a 12-story, 208-unit vintage high-rise at 2850 N Sheridan Rd on the cusp of the Lakeview and Lincoln Park neighborhoods.
The Beaux Arts building was completed in 1927 and has been known over time as the Parc Lane Apartments, Sheridan-Surf Apartments and Diversey Harbor Apartments. It has a limestone base, a brick shaft and an elaborately ornamented terra cotta cornice.
The building’s large lobby reflects its origins as an apartment hotel.
The apartments
2850 North Sheridan has twenty different floor plans of studio, 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments.
Floor plans are accessible online.
Apartments have wood-look floors and vintage touches, including arched doorways and crown moldings. Kitchens have been updated with newer cabinets, gas ranges, dishwashers and built-in microwaves.
A number of the studio layouts have better cabinet and counter space than you see in many vintage buildings. The apartments have good closet space.
Multiple windows in the apartments, the building’s corner site and its open courtyard configuration maximize light in the units.
Views. High-floor apartments have striking views of the skyline beyond Lincoln Park, and east-facing high-floor units have partial views of Lincoln Park. The views to the east will be limited by new construction at neighboring St Joseph’s Hospital.
Amenities, services, policies
2850 North Sheridan’s amenities package is limited in comparison to newer buildings.
The building has a rooftop sundeck with good views.
There’s a fitness room adjacent to a large laundry room, and a bike storage room.
The building has no on-site parking, and parking in the area is scarce.
2850 North Sheridan has on-site management and maintenance and 24/7 door staff. Cats are welcome; dogs aren’t.
The location
2850 North Sheridan is on a busy residential street in Lakeview, just north of the Lincoln Park neighborhood. It’s an attractive location, close to the park and a wide selection of bars, restaurants and neighborhood shops, and across the street from Saint Joseph Hospital.
Shopping. 2850 North Sheridan has good proximity to grocery shopping.
For starters, there’s a Convenient Food Mart in the building. There’s a 7-Eleven a block west on Diversey.
Trader Joe’s on Diversey and Walmart Neighborhood Market on Broadway are a few short blocks from the building. The Walmart has a pharmacy and there’s also a Walgreens at Clark and Diversey.
Anyone setting up housekeeping for the first time will appreciate having Bed Bath & Beyond a few short blocks west.
Dining, nightlife, entertainment.
There’s a good selection of bars and restaurants along Clark St and Broadway St north and south of Diversey, but there are also a number of options along Diversey and nearby in the park.
Grill in the Park is a little-noticed spot to grab a quick bite when the weather’s good. The North Pond is a highly-rated restaurant in a tranquil, beautiful setting.
Duffy’s Tavern, Pars Cove and Miss Asia are just a few of the venues you’ll find clustered along Diversey just west of 2850 North Sheridan. The popular Yolk is at Pine Grove and Diversey. Expect a wait for breakfast on weekends.
Chipotle, Starbucks and Potbelly are also on Diversey, within a short walk of 2850 North Sheridan.
Century Centre Cinema is just north of Diversey on Clark St.
Parks, recreation.
Lincoln Park has too many attractions to list.
The Zoo, the Conservatory and its gardens, the landmark Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and other Lincoln Park draws are all within a half-dozen blocks of the building.
Active recreation opportunities are abundant, some of them unexpected. Fly fishing lessons, for example, are available at nearby North Pond in the park and the golf driving range at Diversey is open year-round. There are clay tennis courts and miniature golf adjacent to the driving range. With a little bit of luck you might strike up a friendship with someone who has a boat in Diversey Harbor.
The park also offers endless opportunities for quiet relaxation.
Transportation. 2850 North Sheridan’s access to public transportation is good, but not great.
The #151 bus stops in front of the building and connects to the Loop via Michigan Ave. Other bus routes are a short walk from the building. The nearest CTA train stop, at Diversey, is a 15-minute walk from 2850 North Sheridan.
Taxi service is nearly always available outside the building. Several Zipcar car-sharing locations are nearby.
Access to I-90/94 and the city’s expressway grid is inconvenient, and can be a source of major misery during peak hours.
